At long last, G-Shock has officially made the MIP square available to the American market but there’s a catch. The band is made from old fishing nets. Yes, that’s the catch, fishing nets. Punchline! Cue the laughter.

I have a few older G-Shock MIP watches and I like them. Well, I like the screen. The interface is lackluster. But this new batch of MIP squares promise to be better because the interface is more like just a regular old G-Shock. You know, you press MODE to run through the basic watch functions such as Stopwatch and Timer. No fumbling with the ENTER and BACK button.
G-Shock released the MIP square to select markets at the end of 2025. But we’re still waiting for the American release. This special edition Earth Day GWBX5600CBG-2 is officially available now to the American market.
Isn’t that such a G-Shock move? The special edition comes out before the standard edition!
What makes the GWBX5600CBG-2 special is that the fabric band is made from recycled fishing nets. The purpose is to cut down on waste in the ocean that threatens aquatic life. But who’s kidding whom? It isn’t the Japanese who are dumping their nets in the ocean.
You know who’s to blame for the pollution in the oceans of Asia. It’s a big problem called “ghost gear.” I applaud G-Shock for taking steps to mitigate this problem because I LIKE WHALES!
