You can get it at Casio.com, which says its sale date is October 27 in the United States. Click on that link, then click “Notify Me” and Casio will send you an email when it drops on Monday. At that point you need act quickly because it’s sure to sell out!
Looking at the watch
The astute Back to the Future nerd will be quick to point out that Marty’s watch is the resin Casio CA-53, and this model is a metal CA-500. True! Casio went with a metal facade and bracelet to match the Delorean’s color and to class up the watch. The term for this design is retro-futuristic.
Here are some other notable distinctions about the CA500WEBF: The keypad looks like Dr. Emmet Brown’s time coordinate selector on the Time Machine’s dashboard. The clasp is engraved with the Back to the Future logo. The top of the watch face reads “Outtatime Since 1985” which is the license plate of the Delorean and the year of the blockbuster’s release.
And finally, the pièce de résistance: the Flux Capacitor engraved into the back case!
Reminiscing about the Future
I remember seeing Back to the Future at the movie theater when I was a kid. The ending was epic. My dad burst out laughing when Doc said, “Roads?! Where we’re going we don’t need roads!” and zoomed off in the Delorean.
We walked out of the theater euphorically anticipating the sequel and it didn’t disappoint! Back then movies were an amazing experience and the Back to the Future trilogy was the top of the list. They had the action that kid’s loved and the details and jokes that sucked parents in too.
The future in the movie series is in our past. The future they travelled to was 2015 where cars could fly and skateboards could hoover. Here we are now in 2025 and all our wheels are on the ground. So in some ways the future is a disappointment to our 80’s expectations.
But one thing about our actual timeline that would be noteworthy to the 80’s vesion of ourselves is that Casio still makes the same calculator watches and they still sell out!
