The mud’s been real quiet since I unboxed the G-Shock Mudmaster GWG-B1000. This flagship watch of G-Shock’s Master of G lineup of super tough outdoors watches has been out of reach for me and my budget for some time. But after saving up, I finally got it! And what do I think?
The G-Shock Mudmaster chiseled!
That’s my first impression. The bezel is metal. The dogs that hold down the bezel are metal, and the Carbon Core Guard case is ensconced in metal. These metal components are angular. The overall appearance of the metal facets reminds me of chisels.
If that sounds weird maybe you haven’t spent as much time as me wood working in the shop!

Jim Kinkade’s In-Depth Look: Unboxing the G-Shock Mudmaster GWGB1000
In this comprehensive video, Jim Kinkade offers an unboxing and his initial impressions of the G-Shock GWGB1000 “Mudmaster” watch. Jim showcases the watch’s key features, emphasizing its rugged design, prominent metallic elements, and overall aesthetic appeal. He specifically highlights the off-white hands for their excellent readability, contrasting them with the negative LCD digital sub-dial, and discusses common user preferences regarding different display types.
Jim Kinkade provides a quick comparison of the Mudmaster’s digital display with other notable G-Shock models, including the GA-2100 (Casioak) and the DW-H5600, noting the differences in legibility across these models. He further contrasts the Mudmaster with the Mudman GW-9500, delving into distinctions in size and bezel material (metal versus plastic). Jim also references a Gravitymaster as an example of a G-Shock with highly legible hands and indices.
A significant segment of Jim’s review focuses on the Mudmaster’s functionality. This includes a detailed look at its ABC sensors (Altimeter, Barometer, Compass) and the operation of the crown for setting the time zone. Jim addresses a past software bug that affected the Multi Band 6 time signal acquisition and the necessity of Bluetooth for software updates. He also touches upon user concerns regarding privacy and the watch’s functionality when Bluetooth is not in use.
Jim Kinkade also discusses the durability of the watch’s buttons, noting their shrouded design, which helps prevent accidental presses, and their responsive feel. He points out the sapphire glass on the Mudmaster, highlighting its superior scratch resistance compared to older Mudman models that featured mineral glass. Looking ahead, Jim proposes future real-world tests for the Mudmaster, including assessing its durability against elements like concrete and oil, and evaluating its track-back feature during a hiking scenario.
The video concludes with Jim Kinkade reiterating his positive first impressions of the Mudmaster, emphasizing its masterpiece design and its potential for rigorous testing. He reinforces his commitment to providing honest reviews based on his personal experiences with watches, encouraging viewers to use his insights to make informed purchasing decisions.
