Three years after G-Shock released the DWH5600 they issued an updated version into their surfing line, the G-Lide GBX5600. I got the blue one to see what updates have been brought to the software, how the body of the watch fares with its updates, and to test first-hand the battery life.
At this point, there are a number of iterations of the MIP square with heart-rate monitor and fitness features. The original was the black DWH5600. A few different color variations came out, such as a white and blue one. (As I’m writing this, both of those are on sale! Click through to see if they are still available!)
Just this year, G-Shock took the DWH5600, which I call the “Square Heart,” and upgraded the bezel to silver or gold and replaced the back plate with a carbon fiber material. The metal bezel model is the GMH5600.
Now the G-Lide GBXH5600 is here in two standard colors, blue and black. There’s a limited edition available in some asian markets that has a brown bezel and band together with purple highlights on the text. It’s a colaboration model with Japanese surfer, Kanoa Igarashi.

What’s Changed?
After a few weeks of wearing the GBX5600 to work and to work out, I can say that, unfortunately not much has changed. The quirks of the Square Heart have carried on to the G-Line version. Sluggish, hard to press buttons, cumbersome interface, and primitive fitness features are still there.
On the software side, the GBXH5600 introduces a tide graph feature. With the Casio Watches app, you can select a city from the coastline of planet earth and see the tide data on the home screen of the watch or in a dedicated Tide widget.
This creates a dichotomy between the two watch models similar to that of the Rangeman GPR-H1000 and the GBD-H2000. The 3rd Gen Rangeman was essentially the same module as the GBD-H2000 but they included a Tide Graph widget and Trekking exercise function to differentiate them.
Metal vs. Carbon Fiber
On the body of the watch, the GBXH5600 has a carbon fiber reinforced resin back, rather than the metal on the DWH5600. This allows for noticeable weight difference!
To prove how much lighter the GBXH5600 was to the DWH5600, I rapped them into my own knuckles repeatedly. The DWH5600 cause pain. The GBXH5600 caused mere discomfort. So the weight of the watch is improved!
The bezel of the GBX5600 is translucent. If your a veteran of G-Shock ownership, you know what will happen next: Browning!
The bezels are so easy to swap, I’d recommend getting a GBXH5600 and when it browns like a banana, just get a new bezel. The big problem is that I have not seen any replacement bezels. Not even on Ali-Express!
