Klein updated their ModBox stackable tool boxes, so I picked up the Medium size. Here’s my first look video. I try stacking all my other small ModBox tool sets. Click here to buy the Klein Tools 54200MBX MODbox Medium Deep Tool Box. (affiliate link)
What’s Changed?
YouTube tool review channels are the ones calling it the ModBox 2.0. According to them, Milwaukee sued Klein Tools for infringing on their Packout design. I have not confirmed that, it’s just what they’re saying on YouTube.
But this Klein Tools Modbox series does have different locking mechanisms for the lid. Rather than the front latches that have a metal clasp to catch the lid and require two hands, these new Klein Tools ModBoxes use a rapid release catch that allows you to slam the lid shut with one hand and it’s closed!
You can see in the above video how I slap shut all the ModBoxes!
Items in the video
I feature the following Klein Tools ModBox sets in the above video:
- Klein Tools 54200MBX MODbox Medium Deep Tool Box, the big tool box on the bottom.
- Klein Tools 65121IMPCT KNECT Deep-Well 3/8-Inch Drive Impact Socket Set, the large set of deep impact rated sockets
- Klein Tools 32787 64-Piece Micro-Ratchet Bit Precision Driver Set, the smallest set of bits and drivers
- Klein Tools 65400KNECT KNECT Essential Pass Through Impact Socket Set, the medium set of impact rated sockets
I find these tool sets to be useful and easy to bring around with me in my big rig at work and in my pickup truck. This new medium tool box will sit in the back of my car and I can put some bulky tools in it and clip the small tool sets to the top.
Stay tuned to see how it holds up for me!
Video Summary
We have a custom here at JimKinkade.com. We feed my YouTube videos into an AI and read it’s response. Here is the summary of the above video generated by Google’s Gemini AI:
Klein Tools Modbox 2.0: Medium Toolbox First Look
The Klein Tools Modbox 2.0 Medium Toolbox serves as a central hub for a growing modular storage system. Designed for versatility and security, this box is built to handle everything from precision instruments to heavy-duty impact sets.
Innovative Stacking & Clipping System
The hallmark of the Modbox 2.0 is its “hook and bang” connection mechanism. Small tool sets—such as precision drivers or ratcheting socket sets—clip directly onto the lid of the medium box. Once secured, the lid of the main compartment can still be opened and closed without detaching the smaller units. A rear-mounted lever allows for quick unclipped access to individual kits when needed.
Exterior Customization with Side Rails
The unit features integrated side rails designed for a “whole universe” of accessories. These rails allow for the attachment of various modular components and double as ergonomic carry handles, allowing the box to be transported from either side with ease.
Lid Features & Internal Storage
The interior is organized for efficiency, featuring a removable small-item tray and a deep main compartment for larger tools. A unique mount on the inside of the lid is specifically designed to hold a Klein Tools headlamp, providing hands-free illumination directly into the box for low-light environments.
Rugged Build & Weather Resistance
Constructed from high-impact durable plastic, the Modbox 2.0 is engineered for vocational use.
- Protection: The box is designed to be dust- and weather-resistant, making it a reliable option for storage in the back of a truck or on exposed job sites.
- Security: The main compartment includes locking points to keep equipment secure between tasks.
- Expansion: For users requiring more mobility, the medium box is fully compatible with larger rolling base units equipped with wheels.
The Klein Tools Modbox 2.0 system provides a robust, customizable solution for those looking to transition from disorganized kits to a professional-grade, stackable storage ecosystem.
Conclusion
Alright! That’s hilarious that the AI picked up on my “hook the front and bang the back” comment! Now it’s on the internet people are going to think that’s the official name of the connection method. So I have to make a tutorial video on the “Hook and Bang” method. Click here if you want a sturdy Klein Tools ModBox to “Hook and Bang.”
