What goes up must come down, as any watch equipped with an Altimeter will tell you. But how far down can the G-Shock Mudmaster go? How about 725 feet below ground?! That’s where I took this Bluetooth enabled watch on our trip to Carlsbad Caverns National Park.
The Jim Kinkade YouTube channel has become renown for its hard core tough tests. And what’s more hard core than the inside of the Earth? I hiked into a giant cave with the Mission Log enabled on the Mudmaster. Then later on at the hotel we took a look at what information the Casio Watches app collected.
Mudmaster Function Tests
Not only was the Mission Log function put to the test, but the dank darkness of an epic cave provided the backdrop for seeing if this premium Master of G watch was viewable in utter darkness. The GWG-B1000 not only has luminescent pain applied to the hands, indicies, and numerals, but pressing the prominent front-and-center light button activates two LEDs. One illuminates the analog face, the other the LCD subdial.
Yes, I saw the lume and the illumination, and if you want to see it for yourself on your own wrist, buy the G-Shock Mudmaster GWG-B1000 by clicking here on this affiliate link! It’s money well spent, and you can follow along as I subject this G-Shock to further function testing.

Google’s Gemini AI took a look at my video and here’s how it summarized it with what was left of its graphics cards. (My videos fry computer circuits.):
Jim Kinkade Puts the Mudmaster GWG-B1000 to the Test at Carlsbad Caverns
In this exciting video, Jim Kinkade takes his Mudmaster GWG-B1000 G-Shock watch on a real-world adventure to Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico, demonstrating its features and capabilities in challenging environments.
Key Features & Tests Conducted by Jim Kinkade:
- Initial Setup & Connectivity: Jim highlights that the Mudmaster GWG-B1000 requires a Bluetooth connectionto a smartphone app to unlock its full functionality, especially features reliant on GPS data.
- Compass Mode & Waypoint Setting: Jim demonstrates the watch’s compass mode, using it to set a waypoint for their parking spot near the family van. The watch can then provide the bearing and distance back to this saved location, though the distance calculation itself relies on the phone’s GPS.
- Altimeter & Mission Log: The altimeter function is activated to initiate a “mission log.” This feature records location and altitude data by utilizing the phone’s GPS, effectively tracking the hike’s progress, including all elevation changes.
- Hiking Experience: Jim and his family embark on a hike along the Old Guano Trail to White City, covering a distance of two miles in approximately one hour and ten minutes. The watch’s altimeter accurately records a descent of nearly 200 feet from their starting point near the visitor center.
- Cave Exploration: The second phase of the test involves descending into the vast Carlsbad Caverns. The mission log continues to record data throughout this segment. Jim also takes the opportunity to test the watch’s lume (luminescence) in the deep, dark cave environment.
- GPS Limitations Underground: As anticipated, the watch’s GPS functionality (which is dependent on the paired phone) is lost deep within the cave. Jim observes that the app’s map displays a “wild guess” of their underground path, indicating that altitude readings during this segment were primarily derived from constant air pressure.
- Data Transfer & Analysis: Jim showcases how the mission log data is automatically transferred to the phone. The accompanying app then provides detailed information, including total ascent, descent, times, elevation profiles, and coordinates.
- Sunset Time Feature: A particularly useful feature highlighted by Jim is the watch’s ability to display sunset times independently. He demonstrates this by showing how the watch can provide this information even when a phone’s Siri cannot, due to a lack of network signal in the canyon.
Hopefully there’s still some computing power left of Gemini’s left for everyone else. I know how chaotic my videos can be.
Anyways, I also wanted to highlight the usage of Midland walkie-talkies we use. Click this affiliate link to buy some for your next family hike. And stay tuned for more information about all of the functionality these radios offer!
