Based on my analysis, Coach Sean McDermott of the Buffalo Bills was wearing a Casio AE1500 wrist watch in the National Football League’s American Football Conference Championship game. In film I studied through the 2024/2025 football season, Coach consistently wore a watch whose characteristics matched those of Casio’s best $24 watch.
If true, this marks a change from his usual choice in watch brand, which had been previously identified as G-Shock.
Coach Used to Wear G-Shock
Sean McDermott earned a reputation as a G-Shock watch wearer over the years. In a Reddit post entitled “Sean McDermott, coach of my beloved Buffalo Bills wearing a G-Shock G-7900… Go Bills!” Reddit user euge_lee posted a photo of Coach McDermott wearing a G-Shock believed to be the G-7900.
This particular model sported a red light button front and center as well as red pushers for the lower buttons on the side of the G-Shock’s case. That Reddit post was published three years ago.
However, this season in the videos and pictures I saw, Coach was not wearing a watch with red buttons.
The watch he wore in its place certainly had Casio G-Shock like characteristics, but in the end I determined it was the Casio AE1500.
How I arrived at my conclusion
In the AFC Championship game against the Kansas City Chiefs aired on CBS, I recorded a sideline shot of Coach McDermott raising his left hand to adjust the microphone of his headset. While I was expecting a G-Shock, I was surprised by two factors.
First, the entire screen gleamed in a uniform fashion that suggested the watch had no subdials but rather one large LCD display. I was expecting to see the “eye” of the G7900 as well as the tide graph subdial and did not see them.
Second, as I poured through YouTube videos of press conferences and rousing locker room speeches of Coach this season, I saw his watch had large bold digits on the LCD, and small metal buttons on the side. The rest of the watch case and band was black.
Jinkies, a clue.
The large digits narrowed the watch down to three candidates: the G-Shock GW-9500, the G-Shock GD-010, and the Casio AE1500.
But the GD-010 has black plastic buttons. The Mudman GW-9500 has large metal buttons on one side and metal button shrouds on the other.
So the buttons I observed on Coach’s watch narrowed it down to the Casio AE1500.

And really I’m sorry he didn’t make it. I’m a New England Patriots fan but this season I was hoping that the Bills would win it all. If for no other reason that to reward the Bills Mafia, the Bill’s devoted fanbase.
I have a lot in common with the Bills Mafia in the fact that I hate tables. When the Bill Mafia elbow drop tables I feel a sense of glee. And you can rest assured that a Casio AE1500 will still be on your wrist after you elbow drop a folding table.
You might get a distal humerus fracture but the watch will be fine.
